Extraction, Isolation Of Apium Graveolens And Its Evaluation For Anti-Inflammatory Activity In-Vivo

Abstract

Inflammation can be induced by a variety of pathogenic causes that cause tissue damage, such as infection, tissue injury, or myocardial infarction. Apium graveolens belongs to family Apiaceae. Various parts of Apium graveolens are used in hepatic and spleen disorders, brain disorders, body pain, and sleep disturbances. The current research was based on the extraction, isolation, and testing of Apium graveolens for its anti-inflammatory activity in paw edoema brought on by carrageenan. Possible explanation: a reduction in inflammatory compounds. The fresh leaves of Apium Graveolens were collected from the Meerut region in Uttar Pradesh. It was washed, dried under shade, and sieved for making dust-free and kept at room temperature or shade. The leaves powder of Apium Graveolens were weighed and extracted through Soxhlet process using methanol and ethanol, separately. After phytochemical screening the extract was evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan induced paw edema in rats. Albino rats of either sex weighing 130–160g were obtained from the Animal House, Department of Pharmacy, IIMT University, Meerut (UP) India. All the rats were divided into 5 groups (n=6) i.e., group 1: given normal saline, group 2: given carrageenan (2%, intradermally); group 3: given carrageenan (2%) + indomethacin (10mg/kg, i. p.), group 4: given carrageenan (2%) + ethanolic leaves extract of Apium Graveolens (400mg/kg, p. o.) and group 5: given carrageenan (2%) + methanolic leaves extract of Apium Graveolens (400mg/kg, p. o.). In results, carrageenan (2%) + ELEAG (400mg/kg, p. o.) and carrageenan (2%) + MLEAG (400mg/kg, p. o.) administered rats showed %inhibition as 51% and 54%, respectively. In conclusion, both ethanolic and methanolic leaves extract of Apium Graveolens might be much significant in reducing the inflammation and edema. It suggests to elucidate and identify the active constituents that are backbone for the pharmacological efficacy and develop in desired dosage form to avail the highest potency or intrinsic activity.
