Abstract

Aim: Choledochal cysts are a rare congenital anomaly in which the intra- and/or extrahepatic bile ducts are abnormally dilated. The aim of this study is to provide an updated review on the diagnosis and treatment of these cysts. Material and method: A literature search was performed in Medline and Scopus databases to select relevant articles, obtaining a total of 38 articles. An association has been observed with advanced maternal age, overweight of the newborn and birth after the estimated delivery date. Statistics and Result: The recommended treatment is resection of the cysts to restore the normal flow of bile into the intestine. Although the prognosis is generally favorable, the risk of malignancy should be kept in mind and periodic check-ups should be performed to detect any signs of malignancy.
