Knowledge And Practices Of Staff Nurses Regarding Administration Of IV Therapy: A Descriptive Study

Abstract

Introduction: Intravenous fluid administration is the most common invasive procedure commonly used in clinical. Worldwide, more than 25 million people receive intravenous fluid therapy. Previous study indicates that staff nurses have gap in their knowledge and skills related to intravenous fluid administration. The present study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and practices of staff nurses in administering IV therapy, determine the relationship between their knowledge and practices in this area, and explore any associations between their knowledge of IV therapy administration and demographic variables.


Materials and methods: A descriptive non experimental research design is used for present study among 50 staff nurses working in selected hospital of Gwalior to assess their knowledge and practice regarding administration of IV therapy. Convenient sampling method is used to allocate the samples for study.


Result: Result of study shows that overall knowledge of staff nurses were average, with mean ± SD = 14.56 ±3.60 whereas practice of staff nurses were identified as good, with mean ± SD = 39.84 ± 1.40. Present study also explains that there was mild positive correlation (r = 0.165, p< 0.05) between knowledge and practice of staff nurses regarding administration of IV therapy. Gender was found to be significant associated (p<0.05) with knowledge of staff nurses regarding administration of IV therapy while no other socio-demographic variable found significant (p>0.05).


Conclusion: The present study concludes that there is a satisfactory level of awareness and adherence to best practices among staff nurses in relation to intravenous administration
