Abstract

Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is synthesized from methionine under physiological conditions. Normally, the concentration of homocysteine in the blood serum is 5 - 15 µmol/l. During life, the average level of homocysteine can increase by 3 - 5 µmol/l. A serum homocysteine level of more than 16 µmol/l significantly increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. The role of elevated homocysteine levels in the development of endothelial dysfunction and thrombophilic conditions, which are one of the key factors in the development of fetal loss syndrome at different stages of gestation, is described. This article examines homocysteine-related placental and reproductive processes.
